Best Wet Wipes Buying Guide & FAQ

Q: What are the Wipes Made of?

A: Baby wipes can be made of a couple of different materials.

Plastic – These wipes are made out of plastic and can take over 100 years to degrade. These are the normal material for baby wipes but are also the worst for the environment.

Plant-Based Material – These new vegan-friendly wipes are 100% plant-based and also biodegradable. These wipes decompose within 4-6 weeks of being disposed of making them the most eco-friendly wipes available.

Cloth – Cloth baby wipes are generally reusable and can be a great way to protect your environment, by using reusable baby wipes you reduce upwards of 15,000 baby wipes that you would go through in a average year.

What to look for when buying wet wipes

Water Percentage –  Choosing a baby wipe that has a high percentage of water can be the difference between your baby having skin irritation or not. Making sure that the wipes are as pure as possible can mean that there are no issues with any skin irritation.

Hypoallergenic – Making sure your wipes are hypoallergenic will help ensure that your little one won’t end up with any allergic reactions from the wipes themselves. Hypoallergenic means ‘relatively unlikely to cause an allergic reaction’ so this on its own won’t guarantee protection for your little one, always look for a high water percentage and hypoallergenic.

Perfume Free – Baby wipes are a lot of the time, scented. But scented wipes can be laced with perfume which can cause irritation to your baby’s delicate skin. Always look for perfume-free wipes, or unscented,  to ensure that there aren’t any potentially damaging chemicals going onto the body of your little one.

Biodegradable – Making sure your wipes are biodegradable can really help with disposing of them. If you use them for changing the babies bum, you would normally wrap them in the nappy, no problem. But when you use them at dinner time or to wipe grubby hands then you want to be able to get rid of the wipes responsibly, and when those wipes are biodegradable then you can dispose of them via the compost bin as they disintegrate within 4-6 weeks.
