Bathroom ESSENTIALS When You have a Newborn

One of the things that many first-time parents get nervous about is giving their newborn baby a bath. Giving a newborn baby a bath for the first time can be daunting, but it doesn’t need to be.

With the right baby bathroom essentials to hand, you will soon realise that bath time isn’t something to be feared. Instead, it’s something to look forward to and enjoy.

In this post, we’ll look at all the baby bathing essentials that you need to make bath time with your child a success.

Baby bathtub

If you’re pregnant, a baby bath may well feature somewhere on your baby registry. Although it’s not a necessity, most first time parents swear by a baby bath as they are much smaller and child friendly than putting your child in a full-sized bath tub.

Baby bath tubs are also incredibly affordable and many parents believe that it’s more hygienic than using the sink or main tub.

Once your little one is able to sit up unassisted you could change the bath tub out for a baby bath seat which fit into your normal bath or shower at home. Never leave your baby unattended even if you have the confidence that they can hold themselves up.

Bath supports

If you are bathing your toddler inside the main bath tub in the house then you will need a baby bath support. Bath supports help your baby to sit up on their own until they can support themselves unaided. They make it much easier for you and your partner to bathe your baby and they don’t take up much space either making them a great option to add to your baby registry!

Once your toddler can sit up by themselves, you can purchase a bath seat for them which will allow them to sit up easily. Some bath seats may have a toy or two attached to them to keep your little one entertained whereas others have the ability to swivel around making it easy for you to move your baby.

Bath thermometer

The ideal temperature for your baby’s bath should be between 36-38 degrees celsius, but this can be incredibly hard to judge by touch alone. This is why a bath thermometer is so crucial for bath time as it allows you to check your baby’s bath water quickly and easily, ensuring you get it right time after time.

Bath toys

Newborns love bath time, and you can make the whole experience even more fun and exciting with the addition of bath toys.

Toys such as a rubber ducky are great to begin with, but did you know you can also get toys that will help to aid your little one’s development too? Toys like stacking cups, foam letters and waterproof baby books are all perfect for developing your baby’s cognitive and motor skills through play whilst other toys can help your baby gain confidence in the water.

Muslin washcloth

Muslin washcloths should be number one on every parents shopping checklist. Not only are they incredibly useful to use in the bathtub, but they’re perfect for keeping your newborn baby warm when bathing them.

A gentle wipe across your baby’s skin is all you need to remove dirt, cradle cap and dry skin from their body, and, if you want to keep your toddler warm just dip the cloth in the bath water and cover your infant with the washcloth.

Rinsing cup

A rinsing cup is the one product you never knew you needed! Not only does it help you wash soap off your wriggling newborn baby’s skin but it also helps you rinse it off their hair too keeping soapy water out of your baby’s eyes.

Putting warm water from the bath into your hands to wash your baby is impractical and tiring, but a rinsing cup helps to take all of the hard work out of rinsing your little one at bath time.

Theses are a great way to avoid a mess a bathtime.

Hooded towel

Most babies hate getting out of the bath because it’s cold, but having a cosy and warm hooded towel to get into can really help.

Hooded towels are brilliant for lifting your baby out of the bath as it helps to keep your little one cosy and warm when taking them out of the tub.

Because it has a hood, it does a great job of keeping your baby’s head covered and therefore keeping them nice and warm. Opt for hooded towels that are made out of soft, eco-friendly cotton as this will be nice and gentle on your newborn’s skin.

Infant and baby grooming kit

No newborn babies bath time essentials list would be complete without an infant and baby grooming kit. These nifty little kits are great for toddlers as they contain everything you need for their first year of life including a thermometer, nasal aspirator, care brushes, baby scissors and nail clippers.

Nappy bin

If you’re tired of having to run up and down the stairs or go outside in horrible weather to dispose of your baby’s dirty nappies then a nappy bin is one item you definitely need to consider investing in.

A nappy bin allows you to get rid of nappies quickly and conveniently without it smelling your entire house out. Some nappy bins contain scented liners, whereas others have been designed to be as airtight as possible.

Skincare essentials

A warm bath is a great way to set your baby up for a restful slumber, and skincare essentials such as body wash, shampoo, bubbles, and moisturiser have all been praised by parents as bathroom essentials as they help to keep your baby’s skin healthy and clean.

Look out for products that are dermatologist and paediatrician approved, are suitable for use from a newborn and contain lavender as these are often kind to your baby’s skin and help to promote good sleep.
